Will I be able to pull it off??
« on: May 19, 2008, 10:05:29 AM »
Hello I have a pre sales question, I currently dont have an account at CrystalTech, but desperately need to move over to a dedicated server as my current company pressed me to switch my site to a different account as they upgraded their whole hosting system, and after the switch many sections of the site just dont work because of the way the new system is setup.

To make the long story short. I want to start a dedicated account (Linux, something on the lower end) and I am not sure I will be able to setup the server my self... Are there any services for server setup available from the company? or tutorials, or something the like? Or do you think I am completely over my head?

My site requires a php 4, Mysql, cgi, Zend optimizer, basically exactly the same configuration one would expect to have in a shared hosting account...

Thanks in advance.
Pasha

Our administrators can help you with a lot of the initial configuration on the box (PHP, MySQL, Apache, etc.), but there would be an hourly custom support fee associated with this type of work.

If you don't have much experience administering a (dedicated) web server, you might experience a bit of a learning curve--probably more so with a Linux box--however, you should be able to find some resources (like tutorials) online that might be useful.

Depending on what your requirements are, a shared hosting (or semi-dedicated) solution still might be a viable solution (We only offer Windows Shared, but PHP & MySQL is supported).  Feel free to contact our sales dept. by phone or email and our team will do whatever we can to offer you an appropriate solution--dedicated or shared.

There is a control panel Webmin http://www.webmin.com/ that comes preloaded on the Linux dedicateds that may provide some help. One thing to note though is that you will need CentOS 4.x loaded instead of 5.x as 5.x is built with PHP 5 as the standard. You may be able to back port php 4 onto CentOS 5.x but I have not tried it myself. Also the default image comes with apache+php already running, mysql installed, but is missing Zend Optimizer.

There is a ton of howto's on the web for CentOS and linux in general for setup. Here are a few to get you started.
